March Youth Investment Update

Hi everyone, it’s Spring at last and it’s great to be out in the lighter nights with longer days.

This month has been very exciting indeed. Richard and I met with leaders at 9th Darlington, who have agreed to act as a host group to two new satellite sections. This means that children from Beaumont Hill Academy will be able to join the cubs and scouts. Leaders are already planning joint activities so that young people with additional and special needs are able to access Scouting indoors and outdoors alongside their new friends at 9th Darlington.

Taster sessions for the children are underway and the children’s excitement is building up to their investiture ceremony on 5th April at Harrowgate Hill. It has been so fantastic to witness the amazing amount of enthusiasm and positivity from the leaders to make this happen. I recently met with Michael Low from Safe in Tees Valley. He coordinates the National Citizenship Service (NCS) work across Darlington, Middlesbrough and Stockton. The feedback from the young people in 2018 was so positive that Michael would like to repeat the A-frame racing activity that Joanne Hennessey, Ben Laidler and lots of District and County volunteers organised for the young people to give them a taste of Scouting. Dear Beaver Leaders

Darlington District Easter Egg Competition, Sunday 14th April, Northland Church, North Road, opposite Morrisons.

The format is slightly different from previous years, we wanted all the Beavers to meet each other and hopefully a chance for leaders to meet and chat. A charge of £1 per beaver will include a drink of juice and biscuit. Each child will need to bring a hard boiled egg or two or a polystyrene egg and their materials needed to decorate. We will have a table with some leaders in charge of the hot glue guns- If your group has one please bring it along. We will also provide PVA glue. Please try to have enough leaders to young children. For those beavers that finish decorating early I will have some colouring in sheets, crosswords etc. Depending on time we could play some games.

Please come in uniform 

10:00 am arrive, parents can stay in the cafe area but not in the hall with the Beavers. Someone will collect money on the door.

11:00am stop for refreshments.

11:30am Eggs are displayed for judging in cafe area. ( Each colony will have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize depending on entries).

12:00pm. Parents collect children from hall, take children to see eggs and take home egg.

Parents/families are welcome to stay in the cafe, refreshments and bacon butties will be on sale all morning, please advertise.

No raffle, tombola or alcohol- as its a Methodist church.

Colonies are welcome to have a stall in the cafe area if needed for fundraising. It is your responsibility to man. Just let me know.

If you have a child with an allergy or dietary need please can you provide the biscuit type replacement.

Jamboree 2018 / Unit 33

Hey I’m Tia and I am going to the world scout jamboree later this year! I am part of unit 33 which consists of North Yorkshire and Durham scouts and explorers!

There are only 100 units in the uk contingent. The world scout jamboree will take place in West Virginia on the 22nd of July till the 3rd of August, however Unit 33 will take the coach to Glasgow on the 19th of July to be in NYC for the 20th.

We have 24 hours to explore New York City. Then on the 21st we stay in Morgantown which is a 3 hour coach journey and then again stay the night. On the 22nd we take the coach from Morgantown to the Jamboree!!!!!

We spend 12 amazing days experiencing different cultures and see how other scouts dress and how their sessions run in their country. After the jamboree we go to our big city experience which is in Washington D.C, we spend 3 days exploring the capital and hopefully watch a baseball game that the UK contingent will organise for us. After the big city experience it’s time for the hosted hospitality which is in CANADA!! Where in Canada we won’t know until may because the uk contingent need to organise where each unit is staying and which Canadian scout group will take us. We again spend 3 days in Canada and the scout group who will then take us will give us a tour of the city and show us how they run their troop. Then we fly home on the 9th of august. Between now and the jamboree unit 33 are having unit camps and are selling badges as part of the fundraising.
